Spot on post! I second everything you’ve covered and appreciate the refresher. Thanks.
Thanks for your comment, Ronna. I think there are so many things we can give our children, and boredom and creative tools are an important start.
Boredom is the key to Imagine! I like that. I’m going to get bored so I can imagine! 😉
Erik, I have no doubt that you have a fabulous imagination. Remember, I’ve seen the video of your camping-trip play practice. 🙂
I would have been standing in that line to get his autograph. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve read The Spiderwick Chronicles. I agree with being bored. I use to tell myself stories all the time as a child. More than once my parents came into my room to find me telling myself my own bedtime story. I was a strange kid.
Strange kids turn into fabulous writers! 🙂
I love this post. I love the ideas behind this post. And I love the many ways imagination can work. Thank you!
I’m glad it was helpful, Beth. There was so much great information at SCBWI, but I was having trouble distilling it into a few themes.
Great post! And I agree – we need space to imagine, whether it comes from boredom or quiet, your mind needs time to wander and dream.
I agree, Susanna, and it’s so easy to fill our mind with “stuff” whether it’s NPR in the car (guilty!), hours spent on Facebook, with video games and TV, etc.
This is an interesting post. I knew I needed quiet to process my thoughts, boredom never occured to me. I also find that the best way to get into my right-side brain is to draw. I tend to draw the character(s) I need to write about that day. It puts their image in front of everythin else.
I think your drawing idea is a great one, even for we “writer-only” types. Sometimes imagining what sort of images might accompany the story could help us figure out what we really NEED to say.
enjoying the thought/memory of imagination supplies that this post inspires.
such as orange-red-yellow leaves in the fall, sand at the beach, mud in a creek bank…
